In the midst of all this, it occurred to me that of all the years that I have been a website designer, that I have never done a fan site for Rick Springfield. While I do this for a living, I also have been known to create websites just for the fun of it. And this idea of mine was certainly for THE FUN OF IT – an impulsive decision that was born in December 2011. I call it a labor of love. It’s something that is currently evolving but ultimately my goal is to one day have this site be THE place for Rick Springfield fans to go to share their stories, their photos and their experiences with each other. The one thing that I have learned the past 9 months is that the Rick Springfield fan community is a pretty extraordinary group of people who not only love their favorite rock star but have a genuine compassion for each other. As Rick visits each town on his tour, I commemorate the tour stop with a new “poster”. These posters are shared on show day on the Facebook page and are kept in a gallery on the website. Keeping up with Social Media is a full time job. There are many business who hire individuals to market just on these sites. Yep. Can you imagine getting hired to play on Facebook and Twitter all day? Talk about a sweet job! But it’s not all sunshine and roses. The hard part is getting your name out there, getting people to follow you and most of all getting them to watch what it is that you have to say and what you have to offer.

I have been on social media longer than it’s been called Social Media. When I started designing websites in 1995, “social media” came in the form of message boards. You looked for a topic that interested you and then you’d talk about it. You never know who you’ll “run into” in these places or who your message will reach. Personally, I actually met my husband in an online chat room in 1995. We were pioneers of the online singles dating scene!  So, with that being said, I’ve been at this a while.

I know how to administer Facebook pages and I know how to tweet. I know how to make my Facebook pages talk to Twitter and I know how to make Twitter talk to Facebook. Wait. What? Did I lose you? If you think you need to be on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc. but don’t know how, contact me. I’ll get you started. Well, one logo can’t. The circles and color in the logo and the chaos in which they are arranged represent the many things that I do – juggling with LOTS of balls up in the air. The film strip? Well, that’s the obvious part! I wanted something brighter and happier. And I think I accomplished that goal with this new logo:

Having already done logos for Millwood, the CEO of Millwood came to SDG for help in planning his wife’s 40th birthday party. What a fun project! The initial project was to be a slideshow consisting or pictures of his wife from her birth to present day. In addition, he wanted all of his precious family photos digitally archived because many of them had started to deteriorate. To preserve them for his children was very important to him. In the midst of working on this slideshow, he asked SDG to step in and come up with some concepts for the party invitation since the ideas that he had been given from another source were not working for him. 

Killerwebs loves these projects because they’re personal. We can dive in and have fun and imagine how would we like these types of things if these were for us! Of course, the input from the client is key. This particular project was fun because he wanted to make this milestone for his wife a celebration. His wife was really into dancing as a teenager and even to this day the client often spies his wife dancing through out their home or breaking out into cheerleader routines in their kitchen. When coming up with the idea for this invitation, it occurred to us that we should consider the fact that the slideshow was going to be a big part of this party. It was in essence, a movie about his wife’s life! So, how are movies promoted? With movie posters, of course! And being a child of the 1980s, what big dance movies where there – Flashdance, Fame and Footloose, right? So the inspiration for the “forty” logo came from the movie Fame. The content of the invitation evolved from there. The invitation was a huge hit according to our client and the feedback he received from his partygoers were extremely enthusiastic.

About the same time that Millwood commissioned SDG to create the Farm Gate logo, they asked for logo concepts for another property – Timbergate. The logos progressed quickly with Timbergate because the client was able to quickly identify the branding they wanted their new property to have. The explained to us the type of atmosphere their new property would have and how they wanted the logo make people feel when they saw it – rustic, homey and inviting. 

The logo creation process usually begins with a brain storming session with the client. To get sense of the client’s style and likes and dislikes, it is common for us to ask for samples of logos that they find attractive. Killerwebs will design several concepts and present them to the client. From there feedback will help mold the final logo. This process usually takes about 3-4 weeks depending upon the quantity of feedback and how quickly the client can respond to our questions. Killerwebs and SDG pride themselves on responding quickly to the client’s feedback. We never like to keep the client waiting on us!
