Rainy days and Saturdays

Posted on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 2:23 pm

Not a whole lot to do on a cold rainy day around here. We are watching over my nephew’s puppy this weekend while he, his mother and my parents are off in the Grand Tetons communing with nature. Mookie is taking to the visit just fine. The introduction to Rachel and Garth wasn’t too bad. Rachel always surprises me. When Michaela was born, I was sure I would have to watch her like a hawk but she was so gentle with the baby. I’ve put off introducing her too Mookie because the Mook was so little and Rachel is quite big in comparison and has the tendency to be a little clumsy. Well, it was all for naught. Rachel is very patient with the puppy and hasn’t tried to be rough with her once.

After witnessing Mookie’s attempts at eating some of our DVD’s I decided that I needed to find a way to distract her and give her something else to chew on. I made a dash to the pet store this morning and bought each dog a huge bone. Good call. All three have settled down and enjoying their treat. Yay!

With the dogs all settled down, we next needed to decide how to spend our day. Michaela has been talking a lot about piercing her ears and so we ventured to the mall. We watched one girl get her’s done and Michaela declared that she wanted to think about it some more. She also said that she wanted both ears pierced at the same time. The lady at Claire’s said that her co-worker would be in around noon so we decided that we’d get some lunch and pass the time. Michaela went back and forth between getting her ears pierced today to waiting til Monday to maybe next month or maybe when she’s 11. Her ears still wanted to think about it. So, a little frustrated for the wasted trip, we started to make our way to the car when Michaela again changed her mind. I was about to call the whole thing off for good when she finally decided that we’d do it today. So back to Claire’s… Again we watched as someone got their ears done and we waited some more for that co-worker to arrive. It was getting later and later and I was getting more and more impatient. Then a miraculous thing happened…a little girl and her mom and grandmother came into the store to get her ears pierced. I asked how old she was. Five, they told me. They looked at Michaela when I told them that Michaela was five, too. Is she in kindergarten they asked. Yes, I said. The five year olds looked at each other and immediately there was a connection. Michaela watched as the little girl had her ears pierced one by one. “It doesn’t hurt,” the little girl declared. That was it. Michaela’s fear subsided. She jumped into the chair and waited for her turn. “Do you want me to hold your hand,” I asked. “Nope,” she said, “I can do it by myself.” *Sniff* The little girl who had given Michaela the courage walked out of the store and stood at the glass window and watched as Michaela had her ears pierced, too. That’s all it took - a peer to let her know that all would be well.

So, that’s been our day today. It continues to rain. It’s dipped into the 30s and a little snow has begun to fall as well. I’m starting to feel pretty lazy.

“We cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem. And the idea that we can keep incarcerating and keep incarcerating — pretty soon we’re not going to have a young African-American male population in America. They’re all going to be in prison or dead. One of the two.” - John Edwards

Exactly how will this genocide take place, Mr. Edwards? And what are we to do with people who break the law and are legitimately convicted by the courts? Shall we not incarcerate them because the jails just aren’t following the rules of affirmative action?

Is having so many people in jail terrible? Of course it is. But what is the point of making this huge deal about which race is represented more in the incarcerated population? Couldn’t it be because more black people are committing the crimes? Shouldn’t the message be that maybe folks like Bill Cosby and dare I say it, Barak Obama are correct in stating that perhaps the people of their race should get over themselves and start to be held accountable and be responsible for their lives? But then again, heaven forbid that these men have a thought of their own. Because if they do, then you have people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton accusing them of not being black enough. Who’s the racist now?

Grey’s Anatomy - Season 4 premiere

I think I will have to rewatch this episode. Either I was tired and missed everything or there just wasn’t much there. One minuted it started and the next it ended and I was left staring at the tv screen thinking “uuuuuuuuuh, what just happened to the last hour of my life?” That doesn’t bode well for this show that I love. BUT, I did not get much sleep the night before and I wasn’t hitting on all cylinders last night. Or could it be that I was distracted by the diamond anniversary ring I got from the hubby for our 10th anniversary!! Okay…back to the show…

Let’s see..we have a new group of interns and George has made the decision to give it another go although I don’t think it was explained why. Last season ended with him cleaning out his locker and meeting Meredith’s half sister, Lexie. Is Lexie the reason? I dunno. Is it Izzie? It can’t be Callie who is just more annoying than ever.

The rest…. Meredith, Cristina, Izzie and Alex return from what I guess is like a month’s long vacation? They let them all take that much time off at the same time? Weird…We find out that Meredith and Cristina went to Hawaii together on what was to be Cristina’s honeymoon with Burke. Alex pined for Ava/Rebecca and got some sort of weird lounge singer hairdo and goatee. And Izzie spent the time alone trying to figure out why George was ignoring her after her declaration of love. Bailey is back and pissed because the Chief gave her job to Callie who as zero respect from the other residents and sucks at her job. It’s obvious that the Chief has a soft spot for Bailey and maybe perhaps is planning to groom her for some other more important position later in her career? Maybe? I dunno. I just hope that Bailey doesn’t spend all season eating sour grapes about this stupid thing and we can see her making other people miserable besides Callie. She’s miserable enough on her own.

I guess the most enjoyable part of this season opener was getting to see how the interns of yesterday had turned into badass residents and are doing all they can to make the lives of the new interns miserable. Cristina is on her way to being Cristina again. She spent some time pining for Burke which is understandable and next week she gets to have a confrontation with her ex-future monster-in-law and hopefully this will close the door on the Burke thing. I thought that Burke’s character was good and the whole thing about Isaiah Washington was dumb and unfortunate but it’s time to get over it.

I am a little concerned about being overrun by too many characters. We have all these new interns and will they be just background filler - people for the residents to pick on? Or will they matter? Is Lexie the only one we’re supposed to care about?

Finally, Derek and Meredith decide to break up but not before they can have break up sex. WHO does that?! And then we’re supposed to get excited about the “sex scene” but then it was a let down. Just a moment of breathlessness and then it goes all slow-mo and shadowy as they kiss and then it’s over. Mmm-k.

So, I guess based on what I can recollect of this season opener, I was a tad let down. I hope next week is better. I will rewatch the episode sometime this weekend…maybe my opinion will change.

Tiiiiitans!

Tonight was junk food night. The steaks just didn’t defrost in time for dinner so we decided that in honor of Monday Night Football and our favorite team, we’d get some hot wings, jalepeno poppers, chips and salsa and mozzerella sticks. In other words, pig out and fight off the heartburn later. Perhaps it wasn’t the best choice in nutrition - I could actually feel the arteries clog after dinner. *burp* But…luckily for us the Titans don’t play Monday Night football every week!
